II VR & 3D

Incident Investigation is an immersive learning experience developed around a real-life maritime accident. The project combines 3D modelling, VR, gamification, and interactive storytelling to recreate the circumstances surrounding the incident. My role focused on creating the 3D environments, equipment, and visual assets that formed the foundation of the VR experience, while my colleagues integrated the assets, interactions, and code.

Year :

2025

Industry :

Maritime

Client :

Mintra AB

Project Duration :

22 weeks

Problem :

Real-life accidents can be difficult to fully understand through traditional training materials or written incident reports. Learners may understand what happened, but not necessarily recognise the environmental conditions, decisions, and sequence of events that contributed to the accident. The goal was to create a more immersive way of presenting the incident, helping professionals understand what went wrong and how similar situations could potentially be avoided.

Solution :

We recreated the Incident Investigation scenario as an interactive 3D environment based on the real-life event. I created detailed 3D models of the relevant equipment, objects, and environment, which were then integrated into the VR experience by my colleagues. The learner can explore the recreated scenario and interact with the environment, turning the incident from something they simply read about into an experience they can investigate and understand.

Challenge :

One of the biggest challenges was achieving a balance between realism, technical accuracy, and VR performance. The environment and assets needed to accurately represent the real-world situation while remaining optimised enough for an interactive VR experience. Another important challenge was translating the available information about the accident into a believable visual environment without losing the educational purpose or seriousness of the incident.

Summary :

Incident Investigation demonstrates how 3D modelling and immersive technology can transform real-world safety incidents into engaging learning experiences. By recreating the environment and circumstances surrounding an actual accident, the project provides learners with a more practical way to investigate what happened and understand the potential consequences of unsafe situations. My contribution focused on creating the 3D foundation of the experience, providing the assets and environments required to bring the scenario into the virtual world.
