Enclosed Space Entry is an immersive learning experience developed around the risks and procedures associated with entering enclosed spaces on board vessels. The project uses 3D modelling, VR, gamification, and interactive storytelling to recreate a realistic maritime environment where learners can experience the situation in a controlled setting. My role focused on creating the detailed 3D environments, equipment, and assets used to build the VR experience, while my colleagues handled the programming, interactions, and technical integration.

Project Duration :
20 weeks
Problem :
Entering an enclosed space is one of the most hazardous activities in the maritime industry, where poor preparation or incorrect procedures can have serious consequences. Traditional training can explain the risks and procedures, but it cannot always recreate the physical environment, restricted visibility, or decision-making involved in a real situation. The aim was to create an immersive experience that would help professionals recognise hazards and better understand the importance of following correct entry procedures.

Solution :
We recreated an enclosed space entry scenario as an interactive 3D and VR learning experience. I created the environments, equipment, and supporting 3D assets required to accurately represent the working conditions and surroundings of the scenario. These assets were then integrated into the interactive experience, allowing learners to explore the environment, identify potential hazards, and learn through a realistic simulation rather than relying solely on theoretical information.

Challenge :
The key challenge was creating a realistic but technically optimised environment for VR, while accurately representing the equipment and conditions associated with enclosed space entry. Particular attention had to be given to the environment, scale, equipment placement, and visual details because they directly influence the learner's understanding of the situation. At the same time, the experience needed to remain intuitive and performant enough to provide a smooth VR experience.
Summary :
Enclosed Space Entry demonstrates how 3D modelling and immersive technology can be used to communicate serious safety procedures in a more engaging and memorable way. By recreating a realistic enclosed-space scenario, the experience allows learners to understand hazards and procedures in an environment where they can safely learn from potential mistakes. My contribution was focused on creating the 3D visual foundation of the experience, transforming technical requirements and maritime environments into assets suitable for VR-based training.
